How can learning Duas support my child’s language growth?
Parenting Perspective
A Simple and Powerful Tool
Teaching your child short Duas can be a simple but powerful way to grow their language skills while building their faith at the same time. Duas are often made up of easy, everyday words and phrases that your child can repeat during daily routines, like eating, travelling, or going to sleep. Repetition is key for language growth because it helps new words to settle into your child’s mind.
Use a warm, gentle tone when you say Duas together, so your child feels encouraged to join in, even if they mispronounce words at first. You can help them to understand the meaning by linking each Dua to what they are doing. For example, you can say the eating Dua and explain that it is how we thank Allah Almighty for our food. Write simple Duas on colourful cards and put them where your child can see them—on the fridge, in the car, or by their bed. When Duas become part of their daily speech, your child learns that words can comfort, protect, and bring blessings, all while expanding their Arabic vocabulary naturally.
Spiritual Insight
A Bridge to Allah’s Mercy
Duas are more than just words we repeat; they are a bridge that connects our hearts to Allah Almighty’s mercy and protection. They teach a child to trust Allah Almighty in every small moment of life, whether they are eating, travelling, or waking up. Allah Almighty reminds us that He listens to every caller. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ghaafir (40), Verse 60:
‘And your Sustainer stated: “Pray to me and I will respond to you…”’
Teaching your child to call upon Allah Almighty using simple Arabic phrases nurtures their faith and strengthens their sense of safety and hope.
A Prophetic Tradition
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions and family many short Duas for daily life, making it easy for children to remember and use them. It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3945, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever seeks protection with Allah, protect him.’
When your child says these short prayers, they learn that words carry power and meaning. By repeating Duas daily, they also practise pronunciation, memorisation, and understanding—all key parts of language growth. Keep your approach calm and joyful. Praise your child’s effort to say Duas, even if they need help. Remind them that each word is like a seed planted in their heart, growing faith, gratitude, and a love for using words that please Allah Almighty.
