How do I work with teachers if my child struggles with English?
Parenting Perspective
Work Together with Your Child’s Teachers
When your child struggles with English, working together with their teachers can help them to feel understood and supported at both school and home. Begin by arranging a calm, respectful meeting with the teacher. Share clear examples of what you notice; perhaps your child understands spoken English but finds reading difficult, or they feel too shy to speak up in class. Listen to the teacher’s observations too, so that you can see the whole picture.
Discuss realistic ways to help. You might ask if the teacher can use simpler instructions or visual aids, and you can learn which topics to practise at home. Keep communication open and check in regularly to see if the support is helping. Show your child that needing help is not something to hide. Praise their small moments of progress and remind them that mistakes are a normal part of learning. This teamwork shows your child that you and their teachers are on the same side, working with kindness to help them grow in confidence every day.
Spiritual Insight
A Strength, Not a Weakness
Islam reminds us that seeking help in learning is a strength, not a weakness. Allah Almighty honours the one who strives to grow in knowledge with patience and hope. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Taha (20), Verses 25–28:
‘[Moses] said, “My Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance]; ease for me my task; and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech.”’
This Dua of Prophet Musa (AS) teaches us that clear speech is a blessing from Allah Almighty and something we should ask for with trust.
The Spirit of Support and Care
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged his companions to help one another to understand words and their meanings. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5027, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.’
By working calmly with your child’s teachers, you are fulfilling this spirit of support and care. Remind your child that Allah Almighty sees every effort, no matter how small. When they feel frustrated, help them to make Dua for confidence and clarity. With your patient support, honest communication with teachers, and trust in Allah Almighty’s mercy, your child’s tongue will grow more fluent, their mind will open, and they will learn to face challenges with faith and courage.
