Should I consider extra language tuition for my child?
Parenting Perspective
Follow Your Child’s Pace
Deciding whether your child needs extra language tuition depends on their confidence, comfort, and the support they already receive at home and at school. Some children benefit from a bit of extra help, especially if they feel shy about speaking up in class, struggle to keep up with new words, or mix up languages often. A gentle tutor or a small language group can give your child time to practise without the fear of judgement.
If you do choose tuition, look for someone who understands your child’s age and bilingual background; the lessons should feel warm and encouraging, not like extra pressure. Keep checking in with your child. Do they feel happier speaking? Are they excited to show you new words they have learned? If so, the tuition may be working well. However, remember that extra lessons are not always needed. Sometimes simple changes, like reading more together at home or speaking more in the second language during play, can be enough. Follow your child’s pace, not other people’s opinions, and trust that every small effort you make adds up.
Spiritual Insight
A Mercy, Not a Burden
Islam encourages us to seek knowledge in ways that ease hardship, not add unnecessary burdens. The noble Quran reminds us that Allah Almighty knows what each soul can manage. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:
‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity…’
This verse comforts parents who worry about whether they are doing enough. If your child needs extra help, providing it is part of fulfilling your trust as a parent, but it must be balanced with kindness and Sabr.
Making Things Easy
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always supported learning with gentle encouragement and realistic steps. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
Extra language tuition should feel like a blessing that helps your child to feel braver and more prepared, not something that adds stress or makes them feel like they are behind. If you do choose it, make Dua for ease and Barakah in every lesson. Keep praising your child’s small efforts and remind them that language is a gift from Allah Almighty, best learned with hope, trust, and steady steps.
