How can I make family gatherings good for language use, too?

Parenting Perspective

Create Natural Opportunities to Practice

Family gatherings can be one of the best times for your child to practise speaking your home language in a safe, supportive setting. You can start by preparing your child before you go; remind them who they might talk to and what simple words or greetings they could use. Encourage them to say Salam, answer questions politely, and share small stories about their school or friends.

Older siblings or cousins can help too, acting as gentle translators if needed. Do not force your child to speak; instead, create chances for them to join in naturally, like helping to serve food, listening to family stories, or playing games with relatives. Praise any small effort they make, even if their words are not perfect. If a relative corrects your child too harshly, you can gently step in to protect their confidence. Over time, these gatherings become moments of connection, helping your child to see that language is not just for schoolwork but is a bridge that links them to their family roots, culture, and warm memories.

Spiritual Insight

Kind Words Strengthen Bonds

Islam values strong family ties and gentle, thoughtful speech that strengthens trust and love between relatives. Allah Almighty reminds us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Israa (17), Verse 23:

‘And your Sustainer has decreed that you do not worship anyone except Him Alone; And (treat) parents favourably.…’

Good treatment includes kind words and efforts to keep bonds alive through language. Family gatherings are a chance to practise this Sunnah by showing respect with greetings, listening well, and using the best words we can.

Keeping Ties Strong

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that maintaining family ties is part of our faith. He encouraged gathering, sharing stories, and speaking kindly. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5991, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The one who keeps good relations with his family is not the one who recompenses the good done to him, but the one who keeps good relations with his family despite their bad treatment.’

Helping your child to use their home language with patience and courage follows this spirit of keeping ties strong. Remind them that even if they make mistakes, their effort brings Barakah and strengthens the bond between hearts. Make Dua that Allah Almighty blesses your family gatherings with laughter, good words, and moments that keep your child rooted in their language, love, and gratitude.
