How do I talk about gender roles my child sees in shows?

Parenting Perspective

Teach Critical Thinking

Talking about gender roles in TV shows is an opportunity to help your child to think critically about the media they consume while reinforcing the Islamic principles of respect, equality, and fairness. You can start by discussing the gender roles they observe, explaining that many shows may portray stereotypical or limiting views of men and women. You could say, ‘In some shows, you might see that boys are always portrayed as being strong or that girls are only shown in certain roles. But remember, in Islam, both men and women have the potential to do amazing things, and we should never limit ourselves based on what we see on TV.’

You should encourage your child to question the messages these shows send. Ask them how they feel about the characters and their roles. For example, ‘Do you think the girl in this show could have done the same things as the boy? Why or why not?’ This encourages critical thinking and allows your child to reflect on the roles they see.

Provide Positive Islamic Role Models

Guide your child in discussing positive role models from Islam who defy stereotypical gender roles. You can share stories of women like Aisha (RA), who was a great scholar and a key figure in Islamic history, or of men like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who showed great compassion and care for his family. ‘In Islam, both men and women have had leadership roles, and both are encouraged to contribute to society in meaningful ways.’

Finally, you should model critical media consumption by discussing your own thoughts on the shows or characters you watch.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, gender equality and respect for both men and women are key principles. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzaab (33), Verse 35:

‘Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women; and the believing men and believing women… and the men who remember Allah (Almighty) excessively and women who also remember (Allah Almighty excessively); Allah (Almighty) has prepared for all of them redemption and a great reward.’

This verse teaches us that both genders have equal spiritual value and are encouraged to contribute equally in all aspects of life.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also demonstrated that both men and women can hold important roles in society, as leaders, caregivers, scholars, and more. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’

This Hadith reinforces that, in Islam, gender roles should be viewed as being complementary rather than restrictive. By teaching your child to critically assess the gender roles they see in TV shows, you are encouraging them to align their values with the Islamic principles of fairness and respect.
