How can I help my child see teamwork as Sunnah?

Parenting Perspective

The Prophetic Example of Teamwork

Helping your child to see teamwork as Sunnah involves teaching them that working together as a family or a community is not only practical but is also a reflection of Islamic principles. You can start by explaining that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always valued teamwork in his interactions with his companions and family. You might say, ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always working together with others, whether it was in battles, community projects, or in his everyday life. He taught us that we are stronger when we work together as a team.’

Praise and Reinforce

It is important to praise your child when they demonstrate teamwork, whether it is in helping around the house, sharing their responsibilities, or collaborating on a school project. ‘I am proud of how you worked together with your sibling today. That is the spirit of teamwork, just like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed us.’ This reinforces the idea that teamwork is a way of demonstrating kindness and cooperation, both of which are essential in Islam.

Use Stories of the Companions

Finally, you can use examples from the lives of the Prophet’s companions, who worked together in their communities and upheld the values of unity and cooperation. ‘Just like the Prophet ﷺ worked with his companions to spread the message of Islam, we can work together as a family to help each other and to make life easier.’

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, teamwork and cooperation are highly valued, and working together for a common good is seen as a means of earning a reward from Allah. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 2:

‘….And participate with each other to promote righteousness and piety, and do not collaborate in the committal of any sin or moral transgression….’

This verse teaches that working together in a positive, respectful manner is encouraged in Islam, as long as the goals are aligned with good actions.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also exemplified the importance of teamwork in every aspect of his life. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’

This Hadith reinforces that by helping your child to see teamwork as Sunnah, you are teaching them the values of cooperation, unity, and collective responsibility, which are central to Islamic teachings.
