How can I make practice fun and not feel like a test?

Parenting Perspective

Turn Practice into Play

Many children lose interest in speaking practice when it feels like a lesson or a test. To keep their learning light and joyful, it helps to turn practice into play whenever possible. You can use games like ‘I spy’, silly rhymes, or tongue twisters that make your child laugh while they are using new words. Read short stories together, then act out a favourite scene with toys or puppets.

When practising new words, praise their effort rather than pointing out every mistake. Small surprises, like using stickers or a reward chart, can motivate young children without creating pressure. Keep practice times short but regular, so they become part of the day’s natural rhythm. Let your child choose topics they love, such as animals, cars, or family stories, and weave new words into those interest. Most importantly, let your child see you enjoying the moment too. When you smile, listen patiently, and join in the fun, you show them that language is not just about getting things right, but about connection and trust.

Spiritual Insight

Learning with Ease and Hope

Islam teaches that all good learning should be rooted in ease and hope, never in harshness or fear. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity….’

This verse reminds us that growth happens best when it matches a child’s natural pace and ability. When you make speaking practice gentle and fun, you are honouring this principle of balance.

Give Glad Tidings

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Make things easy and do not make them difficult. Give glad tidings and do not make people run away.’

This Hadith Shareef beautifully shows that we should encourage learning with kindness and positivity. If your child hesitates or feels shy, do not push too hard. Instead, make Dua that Allah Almighty opens their tongue and gives them confidence. Remember, every smile, kind word, and patient pause plants a seed of trust that grows far beyond language skills.
