How do I choose books that support my child’s two languages?
Parenting Perspective
Choose Books That Are Age-Appropriate and Relevant
Choosing books that nurture your child’s ability to switch comfortably between two languages is one of the most practical gifts you can give them. Start by looking for books that match your child’s age and their confidence in each language. If they are just beginning in one language, simple stories with repetitive phrases and lots of pictures work best, as they make it easier for your child to guess the meaning and remember new words.
Bilingual books can be very helpful, showing both languages side by side so your child can make connections naturally. Where possible, choose stories that reflect your family’s culture, faith, and daily life so your child feels a sense of belonging and excitement to see words they hear at home. Picture books, nursery rhymes, and folk tales often hold a child’s attention more than dense text because they are fun to listen to and repeat.
You do not need to fill your shelves with expensive books; you can visit local libraries, borrow from friends, or swap books with cousins. The most important thing is that you choose books you enjoy reading aloud, because your warmth, facial expressions, and enthusiasm are what truly bring the words to life in your child’s mind.
Spiritual Insight
Reading as a Sacred Act
Reading is deeply honoured in Islam because it connects our hearts, words, and actions to knowledge and faith. The noble Quran began with a command to read, reminding us that literacy opens the door to understanding. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Alaq (96), Verses 1–2:
‘Read in the name of your Sustainer, Who has created you. Created mankind from a coagulated germ cell.’
This beautiful verse reminds us that words, when shared wisely, have the power to shape a person’s heart and character. Choosing books that teach your child both languages is also part of this trust. It is a way of keeping your child close to their identity, culture, and the language of the noble Quran.
The Prophetic Example of Gentleness
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ shared stories with people of all ages, explaining lessons in simple words they could remember and share. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
This hadith is a gentle reminder not to push your child with books that feel too advanced or boring. Select stories that build a love for words, ideas, and faith in a joyful way. When your child feels that reading is a time for bonding and trust, they will naturally grow more curious and confident in both languages, InshaAllah. May each book you share bring Barakah to your family and connect your child’s tongue to words that please Allah Almighty.
