How do I explain the Islamic view of education for all?
Parenting Perspective
A Duty for Every Muslim
Explaining the Islamic view of education for all involves helping your child to understand that seeking knowledge is a fundamental duty for both men and women in Islam. You can start by teaching your child that Islam values knowledge as a means of understanding Allah’s creation and of fulfilling one’s purpose in life. You could say, ‘In Islam, seeking knowledge is a duty for every Muslim, whether you are a boy or a girl. Allah encourages us all to learn and to grow.’
The Example of Female Scholars
It is important to emphasise that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged both men and women to seek knowledge and that some of the greatest scholars in Islamic history were women. For example, you can share the story of Aisha (RA), who was known for her deep knowledge of the Quran and Hadith, and for her significant contributions to Islamic scholarship. ‘Aisha (RA), the Prophet’s wife, was one of the greatest scholars of Islam. She showed us that education is for everyone, no matter your gender.’
A Lifelong Journey
Encourage your child to view education as a lifelong journey, where the pursuit of knowledge goes beyond formal schooling. ‘Learning is not just about what you study at school; it is about gaining knowledge in all areas of life to become a better person.’ You can reinforce that their ability to learn, whether in academic or practical subjects, is a blessing from Allah and should be valued and pursued.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, education is considered to be a form of worship, and the pursuit of knowledge is highly encouraged for all Muslims. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Alaq (96), Verses 1-5:
‘Read in the name of your Sustainer, Who has created you. Created mankind from a coagulated germ cell. Read, and your Sustainer is the Most Magnanimous. The One who taught through the pen (of Light, which wrote all of the destiny of creation). Taught mankind all that which he does not know.’
These verses highlight the significance of knowledge and the importance of seeking an education to understand Allah’s creation and to enhance one’s life.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of education for all. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith encourages the pursuit of knowledge to improve oneself and to contribute positively to society. By teaching your child the Islamic view of education for all, you are helping them to understand that knowledge is a universal right and a tool for personal and spiritual growth.
