How do I help my child trust Allah Almighty’s mercy?

Parenting Perspective

Explain That Allah is Forgiving

Helping your child to trust in Allah Almighty’s mercy is essential for developing a deep, personal connection with their faith. You can start by explaining that Allah is always merciful and forgiving, even when we make mistakes. You might say, ‘Allah is so merciful and He loves to forgive us. No matter what mistakes we make, if we ask sincerely for His forgiveness, He will forgive us.’ This concept helps your child to understand that Allah’s mercy is not conditional on our being perfect but is always available to those who turn to Him in repentance.

Encourage Dua and Share Stories

Encourage your child to make Dua (supplication) when they feel guilty or have made a mistake, assuring them that Allah is always ready to listen. For example, you could say, ‘Whenever you feel like you have done something wrong, ask Allah for His forgiveness and trust that He will forgive you. Allah is more merciful than anyone we can imagine.’

Additionally, you can share stories from the Quran or Hadith that highlight Allah’s mercy. For example, you could tell them the story of the Prophet Yunus (AS), who was forgiven by Allah after being swallowed by the whale and calling out to Allah in repentance. This not only teaches them about Allah’s mercy but also inspires them to have hope and faith in His forgiveness. Praise your child when they seek Allah’s mercy through Dua or Istighfar, as this reinforces the idea that turning to Allah is an act of strength and trust in His compassion.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, trusting in Allah’s mercy is central to a believer’s relationship with Him. Allah Almighty teaches us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Zumar (39), Verse 53:

‘Say (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ): ‘O my servants, those of you who have transgressed against yourselves (by committing sin); do not lose hope in the mercy of Allah (Almighty); indeed, Allah (Almighty) shall forgive the entirety of your sins; indeed, He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.’’

This verse highlights Allah’s infinite mercy and His readiness to forgive anyone who turns to Him in repentance.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us the importance of trusting in Allah’s mercy. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’

This Hadith emphasises that Allah’s mercy is boundless, and by teaching your child to trust in this mercy, you are helping them to develop a deep sense of hope, humility, and faith.
