How do I set realistic expectations for my child’s learning pace?
Parenting Perspective
Focus on Small Steps, Not Comparisons
Every child learns language at their own pace, and this is even more true when your child has additional needs or is managing more than one language. It can be tempting to compare your child to their siblings or classmates, but this often brings stress for both of you. Instead, focus on noticing and celebrating your child’s small steps.
Keep your goals simple and realistic. For example, you can focus on whether your child understands and tries to use new words, not just on them speaking in perfect sentences. Use language naturally in your daily routines so your child hears and practises words without pressure. If they mix up languages or take longer to answer, remain calm and patient. It is a good idea to keep in touch with teachers or therapists, so you know what is realistic for your child’s age and specific needs. When you feel frustrated, remind yourself that steady progress, however slow, is still progress. Your loving encouragement helps your child to feel secure, which is far more important than rushing to meet milestones that may not suit their unique journey.
Spiritual Insight
Part of Allah’s Perfect Design
Islam reminds us that growth and progress happen according to Allah Almighty’s perfect wisdom and timing, not ours. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Shuraa (42), Verse 49:
‘For Allah (Almighty) is the sovereignty of the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; He has created what He desires….’
This beautiful Ayah reminds you that your child’s abilities and their pace of learning are part of Allah Almighty’s design, not a mistake or a failure. Trust that He sees every effort you make for your child.
Make it Easy
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ guided others gently, never rushing people in their learning. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
By setting realistic expectations, you are following this Sunnah of mercy. Make Dua that Allah Almighty blesses your child’s mind, speech, and heart with clarity and ease. Keep reminding yourself that your child’s journey is not a race but a test of your Sabr and trust in Allah Almighty’s plan.
