How do I show my children that Islam honours both genders equally?

Parenting Perspective

Focus on Shared Values

Teaching your children that Islam honours both genders equally requires emphasizing the shared values of respect, dignity, and responsibility that apply to both men and women. You can start by explaining that while men and women may have different roles, they both have equal spiritual worth and are equally valued in the eyes of Allah. You might say, ‘In Islam, both men and women have the same worth. Allah Almighty has given us different roles, but He values us equally for our faith, our character, and our actions.’

Equal Responsibility

It is important to highlight that both men and women are equally responsible for fulfilling their duties towards their family, their society, and Allah. You should encourage both your sons and your daughters to focus on their personal development, good character, and spiritual growth. You can reinforce that true honour in Islam is earned through faith and righteous actions, not through one’s gender. For example, ‘What matters most to Allah is how we treat others, how sincere we are in our prayers, and how kind we are to those around us, regardless of whether we are male or female.’

Different Roles, Not Unequal Worth

Finally, you can teach your children that the differences in roles between men and women are not a reflection of inequality, but of Allah’s wisdom and the different ways in which each gender contributes to the well-being of society.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, men and women are equally valued in the sight of Allah, with each being given specific responsibilities and honourable roles. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzaab (33), Verse 35:

‘Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women; and the believing men and believing women… and the men who remember Allah (Almighty) excessively and women who also remember (Allah Almighty excessively); Allah (Almighty) has prepared for all of them redemption and a great reward.’

This verse clearly reflects the equal honour and reward that both men and women receive for their acts of piety, regardless of their gender.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further affirmed the equality of men and women in Islam. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’

This Hadith emphasises the importance of treating all family members with respect and dignity, regardless of their gender. By teaching your children that Islam honours both genders equally, you are helping them to understand that true honour lies in faith, character, and the striving for righteousness.
