How do I teach kindness when messaging or commenting online?
Parenting Perspective
Kindness Applies Online Too
Teaching kindness when messaging or commenting online is essential for helping your child to navigate the digital world with respect and empathy. You can start by explaining that online communication, just like face-to-face communication, should be thoughtful and kind. You could say, ‘The way we talk to people online should be the same as how we talk to them in person. Words can be just as powerful, whether they are spoken or typed.’
Encourage Mindful Commenting
Encourage your child to always think before they post or comment. Ask them to consider how their words might affect the other person. For example, ‘How would you feel if someone said this to you?’ This helps your child to develop empathy and to understand the impact of their words. You can teach them to be positive and supportive in their online interactions, encouraging them to compliment others, to offer encouragement, or simply to engage in friendly conversations that promote kindness.
Responding to Negativity
If your child encounters negativity or rude comments online, guide them on how to respond in a calm and respectful manner. Encourage them either to ignore the comments or to respond with kindness, rather than getting involved in online arguments. You might say, ‘If someone is being rude to you, it is best to stay calm or to walk away from the conversation. Responding with kindness shows strength and maturity.’ Praise your child when they display good online manners.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, kindness and respect in communication are highly valued. Allah Almighty encourages us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 11:
‘Those of you who are believers, do not let a nation ridicule another nation, as perhaps it may be that they are better than them….’
This verse teaches us the importance of treating others with respect and refraining from harmful behaviour, which extends to our online communication.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of kindness and good manners in all interactions. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2594, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Gentleness is not in anything except that it beautifies it.’
This Hadith reminds us that kindness enhances the beauty of our character and our interactions. By teaching your child to be kind in their online communication, you are helping them to embody the values of empathy, respect, and positive engagement, in line with the teachings of Islam.
