How do I teach my child to speak up when they hear unfair talk?
Parenting Perspective
Stand Up Respectfully
Teaching your child to speak up when they hear unfair talk requires helping them to build their confidence, their moral clarity, and the courage to stand by their values. You can start by explaining the importance of speaking out against injustice in a calm and respectful manner. You might say, ‘If you hear someone say something unfair or unkind, it is important to speak up. But remember, we should always do it in a way that is kind and respectful, even if we disagree.’ This helps your child to understand that standing up for what is right does not mean being aggressive but rather being assertive in a respectful way.
Practice Through Role-Play
Encourage your child to practise what they might say when they encounter unfair talk. You can role-play situations where they hear someone make an unfair comment, and you can guide them in responding thoughtfully. For example, you might say, ‘If someone says something unfair about a friend, you can say, “I do not think that is true. Everyone deserves respect, no matter who they are.”’ Practising these scenarios will make it easier for your child to respond with confidence when the situation arises in real life.
Praise Their Courage
It is important to praise your child when they speak up, even if they are nervous. You should acknowledge their courage and reinforce that standing up for others is a sign of strength. ‘I am really proud of how you spoke up for what was right. You did it in a kind way, and that shows great character.’ This encourages your child to continue speaking up for fairness and justice in the future. Finally, remind your child that they are never alone when it comes to standing up for what is right and that they can always seek support from trusted adults.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, standing up for justice and speaking out against unfairness are essential principles. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 42:
‘And do not mix the truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth, and you are fully aware (of what you are doing).’
This verse teaches the importance of speaking the truth and of standing up against falsehood, no matter the situation.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also exemplified the importance of standing up for justice in a way that was both firm and respectful. It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.’
This Hadith emphasises that speaking out for what is right, even when it is difficult, is part of a strong and righteous character. By teaching your child to speak up when they hear unfair talk, you are helping them to embody these Islamic values of justice, courage, and compassion.
