Practice and Gentle Reminders 

Helping your child to switch between languages politely is an important part of raising them to be a thoughtful and respectful speaker. Start by explaining that some people understand both languages, while others may only know one. Use real-life examples so they see when it is helpful to switch. For example, if their grandparents speak your home language but a friend’s parent does not, your child can practise using the right language for each situation. 

Teach them simple phrases they can use if they get stuck, like, ‘Sorry, I do not know how to say that yet,’ or ‘Can I say that in [the other language]?’ You can practise short role-plays at home so they feel confident and calm when it happens for real. Praise your child when they switch naturally and kindly. If they sometimes mix languages, remind them gently, without scolding. Over time, they will learn that good manners include thinking about how their words might affect others. This builds trust, friendship, and confidence in any language.

Speak with Dignity 

Islam guides us to use our words wisely and to consider how they touch the hearts of those around us. Allah Almighty reminds us that our speech should always bring benefit and kindness. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 83: 

‘…And speak to the people with dignity…’ 

This simple command covers all parts of daily life, including the way we switch languages when it is needed. It shows that respect and clarity are part of good character. 

Make Things Easy 

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ chose his words carefully and always spoke in a way that people could understand. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’ 

Teaching your child to switch languages politely follows this Sunnah; it makes communication easier and helps others to feel comfortable. Remind your child that every kind word they choose, in any language, can carry a reward if it is spoken with sincerity. Make Dua that Allah Almighty guides their tongue to speak clearly, gently, and wisely.
