Should my child watch shows in more than one language?

Parenting Perspective

A Tool for Exposure, Not a Teacher

Watching shows in more than one language can be beneficial for a young child if it is handled with care and balance. Many parents worry that too many languages at once might confuse their child or slow down their speech development. In reality, children are naturally capable of picking up multiple languages, especially when they hear each one clearly and regularly.

When choosing shows in different languages, pick ones that use simple words, clear pronunciation, and repetitive phrases. This helps your child to connect words to their meaning without feeling overwhelmed. Sit with your child and repeat new words or simple sentences together. You can talk about what they watched in your family’s main language so that they can link ideas across both tongues.

Remember, passive watching does little for real language growth. It is your involvement that turns a show into a springboard for conversation and vocabulary. If your child is just beginning to speak, focus more on real-life talk and storytelling than on screens alone. Use bilingual shows as a form of gentle exposure rather than the main teaching tool, and trust your daily conversations to build a strong language foundation.

Spiritual Insight

A Sign of Allah’s Wisdom

Language is one of the greatest blessings Allah Almighty has given to humankind. It connects hearts, builds understanding, and helps to pass on faith and family values. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rome (30), Verse 22:

‘And amongst His Signs (of the infinite truth) are that He (Allah Almighty) created the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; and (designed) diversity of your languages and your (skin) colours; indeed, in this there are (logical and rational) Signs for those who are imbued with knowledge.’

This verse reminds us that learning and using more than one language is not a burden but a sign of His wisdom and creativity. It teaches children to appreciate diversity while strengthening their own roots.

The Importance of Wise Choices

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3982, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘The believer is not stung twice from the same hole.’

This Hadith Shareef reminds us to be watchful and wise in what we allow our children to see and hear. Not all shows in other languages are suitable just because they seem educational. Parents must check that the content does not carry values or words that clash with Islamic teachings. Choose wisely, stay present, and guide your child’s curiosity with care.
